Naxos and Tradition
Naxos is an island with big interest. It has marvellous beauties. Naxos has an astonishing alternation of landscape with combination of mountainous and flat landscape in harmonious coexistence. It has immense sandy beaches, meadows with rich agricultural production. It has developed livestock-farming (cow-farming and breeding of sheep and goats). The products of Naxos have a particular qualitative and tasty flavour (potatoes, orange, lemons, cheeses, meat etc).
Naxos has a rich historical but also folklore tradition. The island is interesting by a lot options, it has life and movement all the seasons of year. The history is impressed in the rich historical monuments of all time periods: from the prehistory up to our days: cycladic culture,archaic temples and statues (eg kouroi), archaeological places of all periods, ancient and medieval castles, a lot Byzantine churches with hagiographies that characterize the island as a second Mystra of Aegean sea, medieval towers, statues from people that participated, offered important services or were sacrificed in the big fights of nation (eg in the Revolution 1821, in the Macedonian fight, in the national resistance etc).
But in the folk culture Naxos presents also appreciable samples and in particular many types of activities in all the seasons of year. Crowd from folk customs, tradition, fairy tales, narrations, incidents from various work of all year, from various events of human life, anecdotes, proverbs, folk songs, special doggerels (they are said "kotsakIa"), rich carnival tradition(koudounatoi, kordelatoi), parades “Bairakia” folk events (that is to say humorous sketches, caustic dialogues) etc An especial faculty of people of Naxos is to express their happiness and their sorrows, the thoughts and their activities with verses many times. The folk poetry has wide distribution in Naxos.
The folk activity is supplemented by the social and cultural activity. In almost all the villages are established cultural associations that try to make the life in the villages more comfortable and to retain (as long as depend on them) the population in the villages by contributing to become certain works in the villages but mainly by maintaining the rich musical and dancing tradition.
The music and the dance in Naxos is not a tourist form of survival, but are a alive way of life that comes from past years but also is maintained live up to our days. This continuity of culture elects a crowd artists, young and olds that rescue the tradition but also that gives beauty in various events of life. Islander Syrtos, Balos with the traditional music instruments the violin, the lute, but also the tzampouna compose the particular artistic and entertaining "colour" that is present in weddings, in festivals, in events of associations and moves emotionally young and olds, villagers and bourgeois, local and visitors of the island and rescue hearings Byzantines and ancient Greek's.
In the cafes of villages the visitor of the island has the opportunity to converse with ordinary persons of the local population that (speaking in the local idiom of the island) and with their philosophy, kindness, the hospitable attitude make the visitor of island feel as he is in his own "house"

Naxos allocates a rich religious tradition. Beyond by the fact that this is proved by the Saints that emerged (Saint Nicodimos the Mount Athon's monk, Saint Nicodimos Planas), this is testified also by the a lot (roughly 600) big or small graphic churches in the city and in the remainder island, many by which they are used and (successively) assemble faithfuls all the year. Particular picturesqueness have the chappels in Chora of Naxos, in the labyrinthine area of old Chora, but also in the country, in cultivated fields etc.

The way of life of her residents has not been degraded by no means by the big number of tourists that visits the aestival months, but on the contrary the visitors is adapted easily in the way of life of residents and it is not a particularity themselves, but a piece of life of the city and the island organically tied up with the way of life of the residents. Tradition has the force of each creative assimilative effect to new.

Naxos Architecture
Traditional architecture and urban planning

Looking at the buildings of Naxos, we can see that history has left its marks on the architecture of the island.
Rich variety of architectural monuments, which had been left over by different peoples and cultures, make up the image over the years.
The period, which shaped decisively Naxos, is the Franks sovereignty with the medieval castle of Chora and the dispersed imposing stone Venetian towers, throughout the island.
The villages are still traditional, because the building was based on the climate, the topography, the needs and all these in charge of the local artisan and with materials from the nearby mountain and river.
The Naxos picture is not different from the Cycladic architecture. All-white buildings, white-washed that have at the most two floors and no surface is perfectly flat ,the one next to the other, with their courtyards united with paved alleys and stairways.
Houses of Naxos
In Naxos we can see three types of houses:
The mansions houses, common houses and towers.
The mansion houses
The mansion houses in Chora are perhaps the oldest urban dwellings in all Cyclades and belonged to rich traders. The main feature of the houses is the large rooms, high ceilings, the large thick walls of stone and internal luxurious layout. A hall dominated in the centre of the house and as a result of its location was to be hosted there the life of the family. At the bottom of the house are situated big basements for storage products.
The mansions in the districts outside from the fort were built by wealthy Greeks. Most mansions have a fort character because of the territory and the hazard of the region at the year that was built.
Common houses
The common house is the most widespread type of residence. In the simplest form it has a rectangular roofed space as a base unit. This single room has always one simply task: to house people and to guard the goods. Starting from this simple type were added more rooms, as a kitchen, bedrooms and a larder for products storage.
The kitchen had the role of a dining room. The gathering of family and the reception of visitors was always take place in the kitchen.
Almost all the houses in the outside have arches, connecting the main entrance to the courtyard. All courtyards have all kinds of flowers and creeper herbs. Also in the courtyard other was a small stable for the housing of domestic animals and a bakery kiln built by clay.
Even today, most houses follow the architecture of the common house.
Of particular interest are the names of the individual architectural parts of the houses:
Anefanos: the chimney.
Morsa: marble columns and temples which frame the windows and doors.
Volta: arches as stone half circles, supporting the roof of the house and decorate the entrance of the house.
Doma: the terrace.
Pounti: the vast veranda.
Kountoynto: the initial entry of the water to the drain pipe.
Afoukla: a drain pipe without the tube. A track for the water fit up to the wall.
Parastia: the fireplace.

But we must not forget “mitatous” and “mazomous”, small houses of shepherds and farmers that are scattered in every corner of Naxos. Comfort one-room buildings made by stone and some mud, with the bind beams formed as the roof , with a large fireplace for cooking, with “methyria” for the wine, the olive-oil and the “askoudes”, with a “damitzana” for rake, a “tyroskamno” for cheese, a “kantari”(cental) for weighing, with an niche at the wall for the icon, “lychno”( bracket lamp) for lighting, “dikanno” (double barrelled gun) for the “gadourafti” (rabbit), a “magkali”(fire basket) for warmth, the “fanari” instead of a refrigerator and a “stamna” for water. Externally there is a stone-built barnyard with the “ampasa” (entry) and a marble “gourna” (basin) for the watering of the animals.
The towers
Most of the towers were built in Naxos in 1600 and after the Venetian Domination, for protection from depredation of the pirates but also to impose its sovereignty to the locals. Today, about 30 such towers are built on the most fertile farmland of Naxos. They have many floors and none has white exterior walls of whitewash. The towers are all in the colour of the stone and the soil of the around region so as not to stand out from the environment.
The incredible style is consisted of bastions, battlements, “zematistres”, large and solid doors which make an impregnable tower.
Churches
Naxos holds an important position in the history of Byzantine art because of the large number of temples which are scattered, imposing, across almost the surface of the island. Religious monuments decorate and create awe with the architecture. Characteristics of the churches, starting from the palaiochristian times, are the Basilicas of the 6th A.C. century and several other types of temples, “kamaroskepeis” (arch-roofed), temples of “mafsoleiou” (mausoleum)type, temples “idiotypoi”, “dikogchoi” (double-aisle), “trikogchoi” (triple-aisle), with dome that illustrate the strong religious culture of Naxos. The materials are “argolithodomi” more or less carefully. Another feature of the temples are arches which, almost all, are semi-circular, rarely rectangular triple-part and also exist “anapsydoi” both Byzantine and after Byzantine temples. The cupolas have drums in cylindrical form, in almost all cases, with minor exceptions of eight-parts. Also, sometimes, we can see cupolas with the base being particularly pressed that gives the impression of a square or a rectangle form with rounded corners. Also are saved parts important marble temples and frescoes that were destroyed through the years by wrong interferences.

There is a great variety of different kind of cheeses on the islsnd. Most of the are not mass produced adn are sold in various point in Chora Naxos (eg. Tsimplakis).
Drinks : Raki, Kitro, Wine. Naxos produces exquiste alcoholic drinks. Some of them are rymoured to have medicinal power. Try the wonderful “Raki with honey”, as well as the famous “Kitro” drink. Kitro drink as weel as other local drinks and delicacies can be bought from Brasiliana, Vallindras and Promponas.
You may also want to try the wine made at some of the villages of Naxos, such as Filoti, Koronos kai Koronida/Komiaki. You can buy some and you get it directly from the bareel.
Agricultural products : Potatoes, Onion (sweet), Herbs (Thimari, Oregano, etc.) Naxos’ Potatoes and Onions are famous for their wonderful and distinct taste.
Ask for them at a local grocery store. Also, the local herbs have a wonderful smell and taste and it would be a good idea to get some.
Art : Naxos has a great vareity of traditional art to scow. The Weavers’ Association of Komiaki and the Traditional Women’s Art Association keep many types of traditional Naxian art alive. It would de a good idea to visit them and have a look at the traditional art of Naxos. Also note that during the summer they are various exhibitions in Chora, usually held at the premises of the 1st Primary School of Chora Naxos, near the port.

The Gate, Naxos Town
When arriving to Naxos Port the first impression you get will remain always in your mind. Portara, the huge marble Gate of the Temple of Apollo which was never finished. This is the trademark attraction of the island, built in the 6th century BC. It is believed that the temple was never completed and most of its parts were taken to build other structures on the island. Don’t miss the stunning sunset.

On the way to Apollonas you will reach Agias Tower. The spot offers a great view and offers you a journey to the way people used to live many many years ago.
Tower of Barozzi - Gratsia
Here we are taken back to the previous rule of the dukes as soon as we visit the Tower of Barozzi – Gratsia which predates the 17th century.

The Tower of Chimarros is located in Filoti, a very scenic village in the center of Naxos Island. It was built in the 4th – 3rd centuries BC, during the Hellenistic Period and is a circular, marble structure standing at a height of approximately 15 meters.

In Melanes lies you may visit Kalamitsia, where, in 1673, a Jesuit monk built a wonderful building, a proper palace, as a country residence for the Jesuit monks, in the luxuriant green valley.

The main reason why day trippers come to Apollonas is the so called Kouros of Apollonas. It is a massive, about 10 metres long statue from the 6th or 7th century BC.

The popular name for "Kouros" was Ellinas (the Greek) and has its origin in 7th century B.C. The statue is around 6,4m long and is missing his left foot and a part of his right leg. The spring is the starting point of the old footpath leading to the cave of Zas, at an altitude of some 600 meters. The cave is of high archaeological importance and a small church, dedicated to Zoodochos Peghe (Virgin, Spring of Life) is established in the interior of it.

It was the strongest fortress in Naxos and the administrative centre of the island during the Byzantine empire, situated on the top of an unapproachable mountain in the area of Sagri.

The Gate, Naxos Town
When arriving to Naxos Port the first impression you get will remain always in your mind. Portara, the huge marble Gate of the Temple of Apollo which was never finished. This is the trademark attraction of the island, built in the 6th century BC. It is believed that the temple was never completed and most of its parts were taken to build other structures on the island. Don’t miss the stunning sunset.
Agias Tower - Abraam beach
On the way to Apollonas you will reach Agias Tower. The spot offers a great view and offers you a journey to the way people used to live many many years ago.
Tower of Barozzi - Gratsia
Here we are taken back to the previous rule of the dukes as soon as we visit the Tower of Barozzi – Gratsia which predates the 17th century.
Chimmaros Tower, near Filoti village
The Tower of Chimarros is located in Filoti, a very scenic village in the center of Naxos Island. It was built in the 4th – 3rd centuries BC, during the Hellenistic Period and is a circular, marble structure standing at a height of approximately 15 meters.
Kalamitsia – Melanes Village
In Melanes lies you may visit Kalamitsia, where, in 1673, a Jesuit monk built a wonderful building, a proper palace, as a country residence for the Jesuit monks, in the luxuriant green valley.

The main reason why day trippers come to Apollonas is the so called Kouros of Apollonas. It is a massive, about 10 metres long statue from the 6th or 7th century BC.

It was the strongest fortress in Naxos and the administrative centre of the island during the Byzantine empire, situated on the top of an unapproachable mountain in the area of Sagri.

Chalki
Chalki is located in the centre of the Tragea basin and it is the most fertile area of Naxos with large olive groves. In the past, Chalki used to be the trade center of the island, whereas today, it is the seat of the municipality of Drymalia.
Apollonas
Apollonas is a beautiful fishing village in the northeastern part of the island. It has a long beach which combines pebbles with sand. Kourounochori
Α small village to the heart of Naxos. Its seems like time passed and left this village without impact. You may see the famous castle of Della Rocca, the famous Kouros in the archeological site Flerio. There are very nice tavernas to eat local products at very good prices. The village Kinidaros is known as the village of “the ones who have fun” and is situated 16 kilometers away from Chora. There, you will see the modern marble quarries, where the majority of the locals are occupied.

Stone paved alleys, whitewashed courtyards, beautiful houses of island architecture with wooden balconies, steps that connect the different neighbourhoods, shadowy plane trees and poplar trees and picturesque “kafenia” (greek traditional cafes) compose the scenery of this beautiful village.
Moni
The historic village Moni is renown for its textile production, as well as for the wood carving workshop, where beautiful pieces of art are made of olive wood; not only ornaments, but also tools of usage. If you visit the village, do not forget to stop at the church “Panagia Drosiani” (Our Lady Drosiani).
Filoti
Filoti, the largest in population village of Naxos but also of all the Cycladic islands, is built amphitheatrically on the foot of the highest mountain of Cyclades, the mountain Zas. Take a rest at the big central square under the shadow of the big plane tree and enjoy your coffee in one of the picturesque “kafeneia” (Greek traditional cafes) around the square.
Skado - Mesi
You will meet these small emery villages on your way from Koronos to Koronida. Rich vegetation dominates the landscape. After the
Mesi’s seaport Aghios Georgios, you will see the old castle “Kalogiros” (meaning “monk”).
Potamia

NAXOS BEACHES
Plaka beach - Naxos
The small tourist resort of Plaka is the effect of the rapid tourist development of the area during the last few years. The settlement is situated around the homonymous beach, within an open cove at the middle of the western coast of the island, some 10 kilometers far away from the town of Naxos (Chora) at the South.
At the outset of your way from the beach to the inland, you will see some impressive rock formations of high geological interest. Going on, towards the small village of Byblos, you will see the church of Aghios Matthaios (St. Matthew), built on the place of an earlier one, as it is indicated by the architectural parts of ancient buildings scattered around. Very close to the church you may see the ruins of an ancient defensive tower, the Palaeopyrgos (“old tower” in Greek). A local, quite romantic tradition states that the tower belonged to a princess who, after the loss of her beloved man settled here and became a witch.
Agia Anna
The scenic tourist coastal settlement of Aghia Anna surrounds the homonymous beautiful and exotic beach with the cedar wood. It is situated at a distance of 6,5 kilometers southern to the town of Naxos, just after Aghios Procopios. At the end of the beach there is a small jetty for mooring of small tourist and fishing boats.
Agiassos
The tiny summer resort of Aghiassos is situated at a distance of 21, 5 kilometers southeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora) and surrounds the homonymous sandy beach. It counts less than 150 permanent residents, who use tο say that it is here that Sanoudos, the duke of Naxos in the 13th century, disembarked when he came to take possession of Naxos, after the Francs of the 4th Crusade had conquered Constantinople, in 1204.
Access to the beach is possible only by private means and it is not very comfortable, as you may reach the place only via two dirt roads, one from Pyrgaki (some 3 kilometers to the Northwest) and the other from Sangri (some 12 kilometers to the South). If you don’t mind the dust and the few difficulties of the dirt road, where you will drive for less than half an hour, you will certainly be rewarded for your idea to come to this place.
Aghios Georgios
The tourist settlement of Aghios Georgios has been developed in the last few years around the homonymous popular beach, situated very close to the town of Naxos (Chora) at the South.
Agios Prokopios
The coastal tourist resort of Aghios Procopios is situated only some 5,5 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora), at the center of the western coast of the island, within a nice natural environment and excellent view both of the inland and of the sea. The village counts some 250 permanent residents.
Apart from the nice view, the beach of Aghios Procopios, one of the best organized beaches of the island, with thick coarse sand and crystal clear turquoise sea, is excellent for swimming, sunbathing and sea sports. All these pros make this beach one of the favorite choices of the visitors of Naxos, mainly of young people.
Once in the settlement, you may visit the tiny church of Aghios Procopios, after which the settlement has been named. Close enough to the church it is situated the well known tourist resort of Stelida. You may also go to “Kokkini Limni” (“the red lake”), an area on the beach that used to be a salt pan; there, if you are lucky enough, you may watch the herons which stop here for a while, before continuing their long journey to Africa.
If you are around during the first days of July, don’t miss to attend the local religious feast, taking place on the 8th of July, in honor of Aghios Procopios.
Abraam
The tiny coastal tourist resort of Abrami has been recently established around the homonymous beach, within a small cove at the northwestern coast of the island. The settlement is found some 20 kilometers northeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora).

The small tourist resort of Kastraki (“small castle” in Greek) is situated at a distance of some 15,5 kilometers southern to the town of Naxos (Chora), at the southern part of the western coast of the island. The settlement counts more than 165 permanent residents.
You will swim at the long (more than 3 kilometers) beach in front of the settlement with the fine white sand and the crystal clear turquoise sea. There are nice rocks in parts, which form secluded small coves, where you may enjoy the sea almost alone; a place suitable also for naturists. The beach of Kastraki is successive to that of Mikri Vigla and it is equally affected by the strong winds in summer. You may also swim at the next beach, that of Glyfada.
At a distance of less than 2 kilometers eastern to the settlement you may visit the Venetian castle “Pyrgos Oskelou”. Traces of a Mycenaean acropolis are still visible on a site close to the village.
Lionas
Lionas is a small coastal village, very scenic, situated at the impressive northeastern coast of the island, at a distance of 38 kilometers northeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora) and 6 kilometers from Koronas, also at the northeast. It is from the small port of this village that the emery mined on the island was exported to the industrial centers of Europe. Today the settlement counts some more than 100 permanent residents.
Once at Lionas, don’t miss to visit the church of Aghios Georgios (St. George); at the Center for the coastal environment, housed at the “tarsanas”, the medieval shipyard, recently renovated, you will get information about the coastal and marine environment and the activities carried out to protect it. At the site “Avdeli”, close enough to the Early Cycladic tombs, you may see the secluded small church of Panaghia Avdeliotissa, dedicated to Virgin Mary. On your way back, before arriving to Koronas, you may visit the Museum of Emery found at the Industrial Park of the Emery mines, see the galleries and learn how mining was carried out during the 19th century.
Mikri Vigla
The coastal tourist resort of Mikri Vigla is situated some 16,5 kilometers southern to the town of Naxos (Chora), at the western coast of the island. The settlement counts less than 100 permanent residents.
Moutsouna
The scenic fishermen’s village of Moutsouna is situated some 37 kilometers eastern to Chora, at the eastern coast of the island; its natural port serves as the port of Apeiranthos. Numerous people visit the village in summer. The few visitors who decide to stay here are rewarded with a nice and calm environment to live in. The village counts less than 100 permanent residents.
At a distance of 8 kilometers southern to Moutsouna it is worth visiting Psili Ammos (“fine sand” in Greek), a very nice summer resort with an excellent sandy beach with fine sand, after which the area has been named. Another 4,5 kilometers to the South you will find the coastal settlement of Kleido, within a small cove, with a nice sandy beach facing the island of Pano Koufonissi. Farer away to the South there is the scenic secluded cove of Panormos, with the nice sandy beach, ideal for those wishing to avoid the popular, crowded and noisy beaches. Once there, you may also see the traces of a prehistoric acropolis situated on a low hill close to the beach.

The sandy beach of Orkos is situated at a distance of 12 kilometers southern to the town of Naxos (Chora), just after the well known beach of Plaka. The beach is in fact a series of tiny, cute creeks, offering calmness and a wonderful sea to those who choose to come here. The area around is also lovely and scenic, with low colorful hills contrasting to the blue sea and the sand and with the locals to pass by leading their donkeys and mules.
Sahara
The nice and quiet sandy beach of Sahara is situated at the western coast of the island, very close to the noisy and cosmopolitan beach of Mikri Vigla, some 16 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora), at the South.
The beach is rather organized with facilities for swimming, sunbathing and sea sports, mainly windsurfing; the weather conditions usually are ideal for this sport. The beach is also a favorite choice for the fans of snorkeling, who consider this place one of the best for this sport.
Parthenos
The excellent sandy beach of Parthenos (meaning “virgin” in Greek) is situated beside the tourist resort of Mikri Vigla; a lovely rock with nice view separates this beach from that of Mikri Vigla. The beach is situated at the western coast of the island, some 16,5 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora).
The beach is well organized and offers facilities for swimming, sunbathing and sea sports, mainly windsurfing, for which the place is ideal, thanks to the weather conditions. The beach is wonderful and scenic, with fine white sand and crystal clear and clean sea.
Alyko
The beach of Alyko is situated within a small cove, protected from the northern winds, at the southwestern coast of the island, some 14 kilometers southern to the town of Naxos (Chora).
This nice beach is not organized, but is found very close to resorts with accommodation and other facilities. It is one of the best choices of those who prefer a quiet beach, but also wish to be in close distance from the tourist facilities offered in Chora and the cosmopolitan tourist resorts of the island.
Pyrgaki
The scenic beach of Pyrgaki is situated within a small cove, well protected from the northern winds, at the southwestern coast of the island, some 18 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora) at the South.
This huge sandy beach is not organized, but it is found very close to tourist resorts with accommodation and other facilities. It is a lovely beach, one of the best choices for those wishing to enjoy swimming at an excellent, quiet enough beach, without being too far from the facilities offered in the tourist resorts and in Chora. The beach gives to the visitor a somehow exotic impression, thanks to the dunes and the perennial cedar trees which form a small wood by the sea. It is certainly an unusual environment, which recalls the Mediterranean coasts of Africa, rather than a typical beach of the Aegean Sea.
Amites
The beach of Amites is found at the northwestern coast of the island, some 10 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora) at the Northeast, after the villages Galene and Engares.
This nice beach is not fully organized, but being close enough to Chora, all facilities are available. It is the choice of those wishing to avoid big crowds and the noisy beaches of the popular tourist resorts of the area.
Psili Ammos
The tiny sandy beach of Psili Ammos (“fine sand” in Greek) is situated within a creek at the eastern coast of the island, at a distance of 45 kilometers southeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora).
It is a lovely beach, not organized at all, with fine sand and crystal clear sea.
Kalados
The sandy beach of Kalandos is situated within a small cove, well protected from the northern winds, at the very southern end of the island, 42 kilometers southeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora).
It is an excellent beach, not organized at all, with nice sand and crystal clear sea, an ideal choice for those looking for a more secluded environment for their swimming. If you decide to come here, don’t forget to bring the necessary provisions along, as the closest store where you can buy something is found 24 kilometers far away.

Parthenos
The excellent sandy beach of Parthenos (meaning “virgin” in Greek) is situated beside the tourist resort of Mikri Vigla; a lovely rock with nice view separates this beach from that of Mikri Vigla. The beach is situated at the western coast of the island, some 16,5 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora).

Alyko

It is one of the best choices of those who prefer a quiet beach, but also wish to be in close distance from the tourist facilities offered in Chora and the cosmopolitan tourist resorts of the island.
Pyrgaki
The scenic beach of Pyrgaki is situated within a small cove, well protected from the northern winds, at the southwestern coast of the island, some 18 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora) at the South.
This huge sandy beach is not organized, but it is found very close to tourist resorts with accommodation and other facilities. It is a lovely beach, one of the best choices for those wishing to enjoy swimming at an excellent, quiet enough beach, without being too far from the facilities offered in the tourist resorts and in Chora. The beach gives to the visitor a somehow exotic impression, thanks to the dunes and the perennial cedar trees which form a small wood by the sea. It is certainly an unusual environment, which recalls the Mediterranean coasts of Africa, rather than a typical beach of the Aegean Sea.
Amites
The beach of Amites is found at the northwestern coast of the island, some 10 kilometers far from the town of Naxos (Chora) at the Northeast, after the villages Galene and Engares.
This nice beach is not fully organized, but being close enough to Chora, all facilities are available. It is the choice of those wishing to avoid big crowds and the noisy beaches of the popular tourist resorts of the area.
Psili Ammos
The tiny sandy beach of Psili Ammos (“fine sand” in Greek) is situated within a creek at the eastern coast of the island, at a distance of 45 kilometers southeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora).
It is a lovely beach, not organized at all, with fine sand and crystal clear sea.
Kalados
The sandy beach of Kalandos is situated within a small cove, well protected from the northern winds, at the very southern end of the island, 42 kilometers southeastern to the town of Naxos (Chora).
It is an excellent beach, not organized at all, with nice sand and crystal clear sea, an ideal choice for those looking for a more secluded environment for their swimming. If you decide to come here, don’t forget to bring the necessary provisions along, as the closest store where you can buy something is found 24 kilometers far away.
